Mais conhecida como atriz de televisão que participou como convidada de várias séries (centenas, para ser exata), desde as famosas "The Twilight Zone" e "Murder, She Wrote" a programas menos conhecidos, ela é lembrada pelos fãs de Jornada nas Estrelas como Vina, a humana usada pelos enigmáticos Talosianos para atrair o capitão Christopher Pike e induzi-lo a ajudar a repovoar o planeta Talos IV, na tentativa de salvar do esquecimento a decadente cultura alienígena. Os eventos foram narrados no primeiro piloto da série, "The Cage". 

Charlotte Gurcke, mais conhecida por Susan Oliver, nasceu no dia 13 de fevereiro de 1937 em Nova York, NY. A mãe de Susan era uma astróloga de Hollywood, Ruth Hale Oliver, que faleceu em 1988.

Antes de fazer sua estréia no cinema com o filme "The Green Eyed Blonde", em 1957, Oliver estudou teatro na Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theater, participando de algumas peças.

Ela juntou-se ao elenco da série "Peyton Place" como Ann Colby Howard em 1966, enquanto continuava com seus filmes. A carreira de Susan no cinema tornou-se muito irregular depois de 1970, embora ela fosse membro ativo do workshop para mulheres no American Film Institute. 

Susan dirigiu poucos filmes e alguns episódios de séries de televisão. No seu tempo livre, ela era uma talentosa piloto de avião, que, em 1966, sobreviveu a um pequeno acidente. Em compensação, Oliver ganhou a corrida de avião Powder Puff Derby em 1970 e foi nomeada Piloto do Ano. Mais tarde, ela se tornou a primeira mulher a pilotar sozinha um avião monomotor de Nova York até Moscou, mas foi demovida em Denwark quando o governo soviético negou permissão para voar em seu espaço aéreo. 

Em 1983, Susan publicou suas memórias no livro entitulado "Odyssey, A Daring Transatlantic Journey". Para Oliver, o livro foi mais do que uma história sobre sua bem-sucedida carreira de atriz e diretora, ou sobre sobre seus compromissos como piloto de uma aeronave; é um livro sobre a força de superar um coração partido e sobre como ela cresceu como pessoa. A partir de sua experiência de vida, Susan recuperou sua fé e a crença num renascimento espiritual.

O livro era o maior motivo de orgulho para Susan, e mais do que isso, era o que ela queria passar às outras pessoas. Susan faleceu no dia 10 de maio de 1990, de câncer no pulmão, com apenas 53 anos.
